Important Questions C-Suite Level Candidates Should Be Able to Answer

The opportunity to work in executive leadership is a goal many people have at the beginning of their business careers. C-suite-level executives are at the top of their careers. They have the experience and the drive to lead teams and companies through new challenges and create innovative ideas to increase success.

The added responsibility of executive leadership means that interviews for these positions are usually not only limited but tough. Though C-suite-level candidates are no doubt seasoned interview pros – likely from both sides of the table – there are some important questions to anticipate and plan for at this level of interviewing.

1. What’s something that, without it, you would fail at this job?

Alternately, this question could be, “What’s the most important thing you need to be successful in this position?” Failure isn’t inherently bad. Being able to learn from mistakes – which will happen in any position – is key. But it’s also important to understand what elements you need to have in place, both personally and professionally, to succeed. It’s also important to know what success looks like for the position and company. While you’ve no doubt done your homework on this organization, make sure you have a firm understanding of how you can contribute to their concept of success.

2. What projects are you most proud of?

This is a good opportunity to talk about professional challenges and how you’ve overcome them. Good examples include heading up new product launches or business initiatives, driving up revenue, and growing your team. You might also consider talking about continuing education you’ve earned while working, as well as conferences you’ve organized and spoken at or classes you’ve taught.

3. How do you motivate your team? What motivates you?

Motivation is a critical part of moving business forward, but everyone’s motivation is different. Leadership has a responsibility to understand how to encourage their employees towards their goals. They also need to know what motivates them personally to keep doing their best work at the highest level of the organization.
