It’s normal to wonder if you’re in the right job from time to time. People can get frustrated and feel dissatisfied with work for a number of reasons, and it doesn’t always mean the job isn’t good for them or where they can make the most impact. But sometimes that lingering, nagging feeling of doubt means it may be time for a change. Maybe it’s not just boredom or fatigue – maybe there’s something better out there.
So, how can you tell if your current job is the right job?
A pay raise might not be a deciding factor in quitting.
If you feel like a small raise wouldn’t compel you to switch jobs because the work you do matters, you probably don’t need to switch jobs at the moment. If you feel like your work doesn’t matter or you can’t make a difference, it might be time to start a job search.
There’s no career path.
If you don’t see a future for yourself at your current company, that might be a sign it’s time to take your skills somewhere else. Companies without any kind of development or training opportunities are often not the best places to settle down for the long term.
There’s no feedback or communication.
If you feel consistently out of the loop, or don’t ever hear feedback on your performance, you might not be in the healthiest position. It’s not unreasonable to want your boss or company to communicate goals, ideas, and other information that makes it more comfortable and pleasant to do your job. A lack of communication can be very anxiety-inducing, and anxiety is the last thing you want to be experiencing regularly in the place where you spend most of your waking hours.
You shouldn’t be stuck in a job that isn’t right. If you feel like you can’t make a difference and are looking for a job that connects better with your skills and values, it’s probably time to polish off your resume and start searching.
